Why is New York City So
Popular - People, Attractions, Ambience
One of the most exciting cities in the world to visit is New
York City. When you visit, you are caught up in the excitement
as soon as you reach your hotel or step off the train.
What makes New York City exciting?
The first thing we think of is Broadway. it is a small
section of the city housing some of the finest and
well-known theaters in the world. Also known as "The Great
White Way," the shows on Broadway receive national and
international acclaim. The stars of these shows range from
world-renowned actors to new faces who go on to movie and
television success.
We have all heard of Oscar, the award given by the
movie industry each year. Broadway has its own internationally
famous and coveted award, the Tony.
Great theater doesn't just take place on Broadway. There are
theaters with productions all over the city. Known as "Off
Broadway" you will find productions that are critically
acclaimed with well-known performers in Soho or Greenwich
Village.
There are parks in almost every city or town across the
country. And most of us have spent some time in a park. When we
go on vacation, we should experience activities we normally
would not do at home. But, a trip to New York should include a
visit to Central Park. It is an 843-acre natural retreat in the
middle of a busy city. If you like to people-watch, you will
find the park filled with people on just about any day of the
week. Whatever the season, you can find plenty of activities in
the park for special family outings.
If you are in the park around lunch time, you may want to
eat at Tavern on the Green. This was a "splurge" lunch for me on many of my
weekends in the city. It has a beautiful setting in the
park. There is an outdoor eating area. It is
classified as expensive but they have a children's
menu.
As you stroll through Central Park, you will recognize
locations that have been used in dozens of films.
So far we have Broadway, Off Broadway, and Central Park.
Where do we get the buzz?
We get the buzz when we get caught up in the rush of people
as they move along the walkways of the park and the sidewalks
of the city. We see the excitement in their faces; we hear
their laughter. We watch the messengers on bicycles and shake
our heads. We are astounded by the amount of traffic in such a
tiny area.
But now . . . we move on to another feature of the City of
New York, its museums. Just off Central Park is the
Metropolitan Museum of Art. Its collections include art from
most eras of history including a Pharaoh's tomb and modern art
by Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollack.
Other great museums in the city include the Guggenheim, the
Whitney, The Museum of Modern Art and the American Museum of
Natural History.
Don't forget the architectural beauties of the city such as
the Empire State
Building and Grand Central Terminal.
Why is New York So popular? It offers a lot to its residents
and to its visitors. It is rich in culture and diversity in its
citizens and it has a charm and intimacy that seem to reach out
and touch everyone.
You can never go wrong planning a trip to New York. It will
indeed be one of your most memorable vacations.
