TV Tour
of New York City
New York, the capital city of America and
everything that IS the USA – from yellow taxi cabs on the street corners to Time Square lit up at night it’s all
you’d expect and more.
For some New York is all about the TV shows set
here, while many are filmed in studios, there are still plenty of location shots taken in Manhattan with it’s
perfect skyline, glamour and iconic sights. So if you’re a TV fan,
this is where to get your experience of shows like Friends and Gossip Girl.
Begin in Greenwich Village, and head to the
corner of Grove and Bedford street. Here is where the outside shots
of the Friends apartment building were shot and you may recognise the emergency fire escape, and the building
where ‘Ugly Naked Guy’ could be seen too.
Head around the corner to the Magnolia Bakery
which was immortalised forever as the place where Miranda and Carrie eat wonderfully indulgent cupcakes and talk
about Carrie’s new boyfriend Aiden in Sex and the City. You could
even try to recreate the scene for yourself if you can find space as this is a pretty popular
place.
Keeping with Sex and the City take a trip to
1866 Perry Street and you can stand on the steps of Carrie Bradshaw’s apartment (remember this really is
someone’s home though, so if you want to take pictures they do ask for a small donation).
Head North from Perry Street along Park Avenue
to the Metlife building. Although the interior shots were filmed on
set, the exterior was used as the offices of Mode Magazine in Ugly Betty, as was Madison Square Park which is
nearby.
A little further North is New York Palace
Hotel. Anyone who’s seen Gossip Girl will instantly recognise it as
the venue used for Serena’s mother’s wedding. It’s also home of
those excellent grilled cheese sandwiches with truffles which Serena eats, and you too can do so by ordering the
‘Gossip Grill’ in the bar here.
Central Park has featured in masses of TV shows
from Glee to Friends and many others. The fountains, the Zoo and
plenty of green space can all be found here, but which locations from which shows can you
spot?
Head West to Riverside Drive for your final stop
on this TV tour. Remember Will and Grace? Number 155 is where they lived, and the exterior of the building is seen in
the show more than once. To see the interior however you’ll have to
head over to the Emerson College Library where it’s now on show after being donated by Max Mutchnick the creator
of this hilarious series.
If you decide to take the TV tour all we suggest
is that you don’t forget your camera so you can recreate all your favourite scenes.
