When we think of vacation, we think of all the fun things we
are going to do. Learning can be a great vacation experience
when it is accompanied by fun activities. There are a number of
interactive experiences that both children and adults will
appreciate.
You may want to include at least one of these on your
activity list:
At the Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art (MoCCA),
you will learn about the different aspects of comic and
cartoon art, its various genres, and the place it has in
our history. You will find comic books, cartoon strips,
political illustrations, caricatures, graphic exhibitions
during the year so check their website to see what will be
showing when you are in town. You may find yourself and your
kids spending hours there. The museum is open Tuesday
through Saturday from noon to 5pm. Children 12 and under is
admitted free. Check the adult ticket prices before you
visit.
Founded in 1899, the Brooklyn Children's Museum was the
first created just for children. It is great fun for kids of
all ages, shapes, sizes, and nationalities. Fun at the
museum is disguised as education. The museum is filled with
interactive exhibits that engage children while teaching them about
nature, science, and the world.
For more hands on fun, you can't beat the New York Hall of Science. There is a lot
to see and to do. You get to interact with a lot of fun
"toys" and exhibits. The activities here bring science and
magic together. The exhibitions change frequently so you may
want to visit their website to see what is showing at the
time of your visit. There are age appropriate activities for
children and the most fun will be on the science playground.
The playground is for all ages and features giant slides,
windmills, and more.
If you are traveling with your kids, a fun activity for the
day will be a visit to the FDNY Fire Zone. General admission is
free but if you want to experience a fire simulation
presentation, there is a nominal fee. The Fire Zone is a
state of the art facility where fire safety is taught. Kids
and adults can actually have hands on to the equipment, put
on gear, and kids can work with their parents to create a
fire safety plan for their home. The lessons learned here
could save a life.
When planning your trip, visit the websites of these
attractions. Let your kids look over your shoulder and let them
decide on an activity for the day. It will go a long way to
make your trip to New York enjoyable for the entire family.
